Wants to Join Ban the Cannons
I'm interested in joining your fight over these cannons.
I live accross the street from a blueberry farm that was put in after I had
moved here. I moved here in 1999 and the field at that time was a corn field.
If it had been blueberries at that time we probably wouldn't of moved here. We
live on Prairie Central Road in Chilliwack. This farm has only been here approx
4 years. Three years of fighting off the birds.
This year they had a cannon which was maybe 400 feet from my house. When it
went off it shook the windows in the house. The weekends are my time to sleep
in and there was no way of doing that with these cannons starting at 7 am every
morning. The weekend my daughter and her husband and 2 boys were here was
terrible. My daughter and her husband slept outside in a tent and could feel
the vibration from the cannons through the ground. My one grandson who was 4
months old at the time would pretty much jump out of his skin every time the
cannon went off. There was even times it made me jump. Also my husband worked
Saturday nights and didn't get home until 2 -4 am and the cannons would then
start at 7 am.
I did have an agreement with the farmer not to start running the cannons on
Sunday morning until 9am but that was only when he remembered and he forgot
more times than he remembered. Last summer, 2006, they had a bird screecher
going just across from our house and it would go all day making it very hard to
talk to anyone in the yard. They were also using the cannons then as well.
These cannons make it so hard to have company in the summer. Even to be outside
is horrible.
In this area of where I live it is building up with houses so fast that the
only decent thing would be for this farmer to find another way of scaring off
the birds. Especially since the cannons really don't work that well. The cannon
goes off the birds fly away, the cannon stops the birds fly back. How is that
saving the crops. I believe the nets really would work better plus I would
rather look at them than have to listen to those cannons all summer.
Thank you
