To: The Bellingham Herald,
Thank you for your concern for our farmers in your opinion piece on preserving
Whatcom farmland. The agricultural parts of our community are truly a treasure
to preserve and support.
There is one point I would like to correct: air cannons are used extensively
right now to protect blueberry crops, but that seems to be because of a lack of
research and available information on alternatives.
Creative Scarecrows was formed in 2007 to find win-win solutions for our
farmers and for the residents who are suffering from the noise of these
cannons.
We believe the cannon noise isn’t necessary
, and we’re meeting many people who also want to find better solutions.
The key word is
solutions
. Finding better solutions is a part of the evolution of farming practices.
