Attention: Surrey MLA Kevin Falcon,
My husband and I moved from our downtown condo to a home in Cloverdale three
weeks ago. My excitement at a having a 'quiet' home out in Cloverdale was
rudely shaken by waking up at 5:00am by constant banging. At first we did not
know what the horrible noise was and then found out from our neighbour it was
the cannons from the blueberry farms.
We live near the Cloverdale Athletic park and all the neighbour are woken up
often BEFORE the 6:30am 'start time'. In fact we've been woken up as early as
3:00am on occassion!
Our neighbour states that while driving home early from work one morning along
168th and hwy 10 it was so loud in his car he thought his car had been shot at!
This is ridiculous! Quite frankly it is very liberal to even permit the use of
these cannons. Even 6:30am is quite early! Who wants to hear this on a saturday
or sunday morning at 6:30am!? (Or earlier in many cases!)
Also the farmer(s) are NOT using the one shot per 5 mins rule! These cannons
are going off within a second or less! It's like living in Iraq! Now this may
sound like an excessive comparison, but to an older gentlemen I spoke to who
fought in Vietnam he had to move because the sound reminded him of the war!
Something needs to be done. I would like to see (hear) the elimination of them
altogether because it way above an acceptable sound level and means to scare
away birds. It's not fair to have your neighbours suffer in such a way. Farmers
managed before these horrible machines were made, and I am sure there are MUCH
better means to detract birds than robbing your neighbourhood from their much
needed sleep!
With regards,
JJ in Cloverdale
