Dear Safeway, Business Ethics,
I have always shopped Safeway, until now. According to packages of blueberries in our local Safeway stores the supplier is Purewal Farms who continue to use audible bird scare devices (ABSDs) to scare birds off their blueberry crops.

ABSDs or blueberry cannons as they're called locally, are a hugely contentious instrument in the Fraser Valley and because our farm is subjected daily to the noise of these devices I refuse to buy blueberries from any farm that uses them.

I've been informed that the Overwaitea Food Group buys their blueberries from blueberry farms that do not use bird scare cannons, so that's where I'll be shopping from now on for all my groceries, not just blueberries.

I'll also be passing this information to all my neighbours, friends and family.

As your website says "caring about the community is a Safeway tradition" so I hope that Safeway will "demonstrate environmental leadership" and reconsider buying only from farms that do not use cannons as those farmers demonstrate social responsibility by using the many other quiet means available to scare birds.

Thank you,
M.D.
