Surrey resident and long time Ban the Cannons member, Jim McMurtry, filed a law suit against the City of Surrey on Friday, August 19th. Jim maintains that Surrey has bylaws in place to ensure that blueberry farmers abide by Ministry of Agriculture guidelines.

However, farmers in Jim's area constantly disregard the guidelines. Jim and his neighbopurs have to endure overnight cannon blasts, blasts through the noon day break period, etc.etc.

To the best of Jim's knowledge the City has never issued one bylaw infraction ticket in all the years the noise bylaw has been in place, not one! But blueberry farmers in and around Cloverdale break the rules continually.

All Surrey does to address residents complaints is refer them to the BC Blueberry council for action, which is like giving the fox the keys to the hen house door!

Jim would like to see the City follow up on propane cannon noise complaints, give warnings to first time offenders, and then begin to issue fines against blueberry growers who continue to disregard the bylaw.
